The Duck Stop

What started as a simple duck and buffalo farm became a genuine social media phenomenon after backpackers began stopping to photograph the ducks - the farm, founded by local farmer Trần Văn Quỳnh, now has over 120 free-roaming ducks living in an area locals affectionately call 'Duck Heaven,' alongside a retired water buffalo named Donald Trump.

Visitors become 'Duck Leader' for the visit: feeding the flock, leading a duck parade, trying the ticklish 'duck massage,' and finishing with a homemade bánh xèo (Vietnamese savoury pancake) and a drink.

It's built a considerable online following - millions of views across TikTok and Instagram, thousands of Google reviews with a very high rating, and industry recognition including a TripAdvisor Travellers' Choice Award. It's a distinctly different kind of Phong Nha stop from the caves and jungle treks that dominate most itineraries here - playful, a little absurd, and popular with families and solo travellers alike.

Interestingly, it draws far more enthusiasm from international visitors than from Vietnamese travellers - for many Vietnamese guests, duck-herding and rural farm scenes are simply an ordinary part of the countryside they grew up around, while it's a genuinely novel experience for visitors from more urbanised countries.

The Duck Stop is in Khương Hà 3 hamlet, Hưng Trạch commune, out in Bong Lai Valley - about 9-15km (roughly 10-20 minutes by motorbike or car) from Sơn Trạch town, and just over 30km from Đồng Hới. From central Phong Nha, follow the Hồ Chí Minh trail heading east; the turnoff is signposted after crossing Bung Bridge, about 25km from the town centre. The final stretch runs through hilly terrain and can be a bit rough going, so take it slowly on a motorbike.

There's no reliable taxi or Grab coverage this far out, so the practical options are a private driver/tour, a rented motorbike, or cycling if you're comfortable with rural roads. Whichever you choose, arrange your return trip in advance or ask your driver to wait, since transport back isn't something you can count on finding on the spot. Many visitors combine the trip with other stops in Bong Lai Valley, since it's a dedicated excursion rather than a quick detour from central Phong Nha.

The farm has a simple seating area, basic restroom facilities, and a foot-washing station for cleaning up afterward. The core duck interaction - feeding and the 'duck massage' - takes about 30 minutes, with the full visit (including the pancake and a look around) closer to 30 minutes to an hour. Feed for the ducks is included and unlimited - take as much as you like from the supply provided rather than needing to buy extra.

Handed a fistful of rice, you'll have upwards of a hundred ducks rushing toward you in a noisy, chaotic scrum, which is exactly the appeal, and the 'massage' itself is simply the ducks nibbling at your feet or hands as you stand among them.

Buffalo riding out in the field is available as a separate add-on. A short walk around the property takes in local crops - peanuts, cassava, peppercorn - with a chance to sample fresh produce. The visit wraps up with a homemade bánh xèo pancake and your choice of drink.

The farm provides 'dép rọ bộ đội' - classic Vietnamese military-style mesh sandals - to keep your own shoes out of the mud. It's rustic and unpolished by design - a real working farm rather than a manicured attraction - and gets busiest when tour groups arrive, so timing matters if you want a quieter visit.

The Duck Stop works best as a deliberately light, funny detour on a Phong Nha itinerary otherwise dominated by caves and trekking - it's not trying to be profound, just a genuinely enjoyable hour on a real farm with an unusually charismatic flock of ducks. Because it's a dedicated trip out to Bong Lai Valley rather than a stop you'll stumble across, it's worth planning it deliberately - pairing it with lunch at the Pub With Cold Beer or another Bong Lai Valley stop makes for an efficient half-day out of central Phong Nha.

Double-check you're heading to the original, well-reviewed Duck Stop rather than a nearby copycat, and go in with reasonable expectations: it's memorable and fun precisely because it's a bit silly, not because it's a polished production.
