Nha Trang Beach (Tran Phu Beach)

Trần Phú Beach is Nha Trang's 6-7 km city-centre beach, a few minutes' walk from most hotels - golden fine sand, a flat, gently sloping seabed and sunrise swims with locals, but busy, with rip currents that lifeguards deal with every peak season.

Nha Trang Beach (Tran Phu Beach)
Best months

Mar - Sep is the best season: dry, sunny but not too muggy, with calm, clear water and little storm risk. Oct - Dec is the rainy season, when strong winds and big waves can hit the shore and the water may turn cloudy, with debris washed down from the rivers - check the forecast before you plan around the beach. Rip currents can form at any time of year, including the Tết holiday period.

5:00-8:20 AM is the best window: cool, quieter, clearer water and the sunrise - though hundreds of locals swim here from about 5:30 AM. In the afternoon, go from about 4:20 to 6:00 PM. Avoid roughly 10:20 AM to 3:00 PM, when UV is extremely strong.
Entry fee
Free along the whole beach. You only pay for services such as sun loungers, umbrellas, freshwater showers and water sports. Ask the lounger price before you sit down - some charge per session, others per day, and holiday prices can be double.

What Makes Nha Trang Beach Special

Trần Phú Beach runs for about 6-7 km along Trần Phú street in the heart of Nha Trang, following the curve of the bay from the Trần Phú bridge in the north to Nha Trang port in the south. Since the July 2025 administrative changes, the area belongs to Nha Trang ward; many articles still use the old ward names Lộc Thọ, Tân Tiến or Vĩnh Nguyên, so use the street name when booking a ride or checking a map.

It's the most important beach in Nha Trang not because it's the prettiest in the province, but because it's the most convenient: from any hotel on Trần Phú, Nguyễn Thiện Thuật, Hùng Vương or Biệt Thự streets, the sand is a 3-8 minute walk. In the morning it fills with locals exercising and swimming at sunrise; in the evening, families stroll along the beach road. The whole stretch, together with Phạm Văn Đồng beach to the north, is being redeveloped into a 16.4 km chain of seafront parks.

Golden Sand, Not White

Three natural features make Trần Phú unusual for a city beach. The seabed is flat and slopes gently, so in most sections you can wade a long way out as the depth increases steadily, without sudden drop-offs. The sand is fine and golden - not white, despite what many articles say; if you want pure white sand, look at Bãi Dài in Cam Ranh or Dốc Lết. And the islands of Hòn Tre and Hòn Miễu shelter the bay, so the onshore breeze stays gentle and pleasant year-round.

How to Get to Nha Trang Beach

Cam Ranh International Airport is about 30-35 km from the centre; take a taxi, airport bus or transfer into town. Nha Trang railway station is right in the city centre, and plenty of buses run from Ho Chi Minh City, Đà Nẵng, Đà Lạt and other cities. Once in Nha Trang, the beach is simply across Trần Phú street - most central hotels are within walking distance.

What to Expect at Nha Trang Beach

Expect a lively, well-used public beach with shady trees and landscaped gardens behind the sand, views of the mountains, the city skyline and Vinpearl across the bay, and loungers, umbrellas and water sports for rent. It's busy, especially at peak hours, on weekends and holidays, and very popular with Russian visitors. Mornings are the most beautiful time, with the sunrise over the bay - but you won't be alone: around 5:30 AM, crowds of locals are already in the water.

Conditions vary. On calm days the water is clear and blue; at other times it's cloudy, especially in the rainy season, and seaweed and debris wash up at high tide. Litter and cigarette butts in the sand are a common complaint, and facilities are uneven - some visitors find foot-wash stations and showers, others report no showers or changing rooms. Vendors are a constant presence; some find them friendly and low-pressure, others say they crowd the loungers. Head further north for a cleaner, quieter, more local stretch.

Who shouldn't swim here

The Nha Trang Bay Management Board advises against swimming for people with heart conditions or high blood pressure, anyone who has been drinking or using stimulants, anyone who has just eaten a big meal, and children without direct adult supervision. Even strong swimmers should warm up first, and everyone should stay within the flagged, lifeguarded areas.

Travel Tips for Nha Trang Beach

Treat Trần Phú as Nha Trang's convenient everyday beach: a sunrise swim before breakfast, a late-afternoon dip, an evening walk along the seafront. Bring sunscreen, sunglasses and a hat, and avoid the middle of the day. If you want quieter, cleaner sand or calmer water for small children, it's worth a day trip to beaches outside the city.

Combine a morning on the beach with the Po Nagar Cham Towers, just north of the centre, and finish with seafood at one of the many restaurants near the beach.

Based on real traveler experiences and commonly mentioned advice from multiple visitors.

  • Swim at 5:00-8:20 AM or 4:20-6:00 PM
  • Walk 500-700 m north of the busiest stretch for more space
  • Agree lounger and water-sport prices before you start
  • ⚠️ Rip currents happen here: over just six days of Tết 2026, lifeguards rescued 20 people swept out from the Trần Phú and Phạm Văn Đồng beaches, and 5 needed hospital care. Swim only near lifeguards and flags, and don't go far out
  • Don't swim after drinking, right after a big meal, or if you have heart problems or high blood pressure. Warm up first - cramps in cool water cause many accidents
  • Children must be directly supervised by an adult at all times
  • Night swimming isn't banned, but lifeguards have gone home and you can't see currents or flags - if you go in at night, stay at the water's edge, in a group
  • For fewer people, walk 500-700 m north from the busiest stretch in front of the big hotels - it's just as nice and still has lifeguards. Families who need showers, shaded loungers and food nearby may prefer the busier central sections
  • Ask the lounger price before you sit down, confirm how long a jet ski 'turn' lasts (10 or 20 minutes can vary by stall), and don't bring many valuables
  • Bring cash - many beach vendors and small places prefer it
  • Expect a steady stream of vendors selling fruit, snacks and souvenirs near the loungers
  • Take your rubbish with you - litter and cigarette butts in the sand are a recurring complaint
  • With young children (under about 10), Dốc Lết beach, about 50 km north, has shallower water and much gentler waves
