Con Dao is Vietnam's most extraordinary island - a former French colonial penal colony with a dark and layered history, now one of Southeast Asia's most pristine marine environments. Near-empty beaches, world-class diving and snorkeling, sea turtle nesting sites, and one of the best-preserved national parks in the country. It's more expensive to reach and stay than other Vietnamese islands, which is exactly why it has stayed this way.
