What Makes Con Dao National Park Special

Con Dao National Park covers 19,883 hectares across 14 islands of the Con Dao archipelago, 185km from Ho Chi Minh City - roughly 5,883 hectares of terrestrial tropical forest and 14,000 hectares of marine environment, with a 20,500 hectare buffer zone. Established in 1993 and designated a Ramsar Wetland of International Importance in 2013, the park protects three distinct ecosystems: primary tropical forest, coral reef (360+ species, among the most diverse in Vietnam), and seagrass meadows home to dugong - one of the last remaining dugong populations in Vietnam. The terrestrial park is home to 1,077 plant species, 160 animal species, and three endemic species found nowhere else on earth: the Con Dao black squirrel, the Con Dao gecko, and the Con Dao long-tailed macaque. Sea turtle conservation is the park's most significant programme - over 400 green turtles and hawksbill turtles return each year to nest on the beaches of Hòn Bảy Cạnh and Hòn Cau, making Côn Đảo one of the most important turtle nesting sites in Southeast Asia.
