Thiên Cầm beach lies in Thiên Cầm commune (formerly part of Cẩm Xuyên district), about 20 km from central Hà Tĩnh city. The beach curves in a bow for about 10 km, with three main bathing areas, white sand and - on good days - water clear enough to see your feet. It's often counted among the prettier beaches of central Vietnam, set within a landscape of mountain, sea, temples and pagodas.
The name comes from a legend. During the reign of the 13th Hùng king, the king and his entourage stopped here for the night and heard the wind sighing through the sky, clouds and water, blending with the waves into a clear, ringing melody - like a concert played by nature. The king named the place Thiên Cầm, "heavenly lute", and inscribed the words "Thiên Cầm Sơn" on a nearby mountain.
