What Makes Ba Hòn Đầm Islands Special
Ba Hòn Đầm sits within the Bà Lụa Archipelago - a group of over 34 islands covering roughly 70 km² of the Gulf of Thailand between Hà Tiên and Phú Quốc in Kiên Giang province. The name refers to three specific islands - Hòn Đầm Giếng, Hòn Đầm Dương, and Hòn Đầm Đước - arranged in a triangle around a calm central lagoon of shallow, clear water. The islands sit about 20km offshore from Kiên Lương town. Often called the 'tiểu Hạ Long của phương Nam' (mini Ha Long of the South), Ba Hòn Đầm is known for its colourful pebble beaches, the unique tidal path between the three islands, and the calm enclosed water in the middle that makes it unusually approachable for swimming and foraging. From November to April, bioluminescence appears in the water at night - one of the quieter but more memorable reasons to stay overnight.

What to Expect
👀 On the Ground
The three islands form a triangle with a calm shallow lagoon in the centre - the defining feature of Ba Hòn Đầm. The water between the islands is clear and only waist-deep at low tide, making it safe and easy to wade between all three. Each island has food stalls and its own character. Morning tides are higher, good for swimming; from midday onward the water drops and the sandflats become accessible for clamming and shellfish foraging. Đầm Đước has the colourful multi-toned pebble beach most photographed on social media, and is the main hub for overnight accommodation. Đầm Dương has the calmest swimming conditions. Đầm Giếng is wilder with a longer sandbar. Most people visit as a day trip, but staying overnight adds two experiences unavailable to day visitors: watching the sunset from the islands, and bioluminescence in the water from 9-10 PM during the dry season.
Travel Tips
🧳 Tips
Ba Hòn Đầm is on almost no foreign-language travel resources - which is part of its appeal. The comparison with Phú Quốc is instructive: same province, same Gulf of Thailand water, completely different experience. If you have an extra half-day, the Bà Lụa Archipelago also includes Hòn Heo - the largest island in the group, with old-growth forest, Sơn Hải Tự pagoda, and basalt rock formations. The overnight option on Đầm Đước is the right call if your schedule allows - sunrise and bioluminescence are both unavailable on a day trip. Bring everything you need from the mainland; island prices are high and stock is limited.
