Cat Ba Town

Cat Ba Town is the only significant settlement on Cat Ba Island, Vietnam's largest island in the Gulf of Tonkin, located in Cát Hải district of Hải Phòng province. The town occupies a sheltered harbour on the island's southern coast and functions as the operational base for all activity in the Cat Ba-Lan Ha Bay area: overnight cruises, kayaking tours, Cat Ba National Park treks, rock climbing at Lan Ha Bay, and day trips to the surrounding karst islands.

The town itself is compact and walkable, with a harbour-front strip of hotels, tour operators, and seafood restaurants facing the bay, a night market running along the waterfront in the evenings, and the new Sunworld artificial beach opening up the town's sea access. Núi Ngọc street, running one block inland from the harbour, is where local residents eat and where prices are noticeably lower than the tourist-facing waterfront.

Cat Ba Town is reached by fast boat from Hải Phòng's Bến Bính pier (approximately 45 minutes) or by car ferry via Phù Long (approximately 2.5 hours total including bus connection from Hanoi or Hai Phong). From Hanoi, the fastest option is the combined bus-fast boat service from Hanoi's Luong Yen bus station, arriving directly at Cat Ba town pier in approximately 3.5-4 hours. From Hai Phong city, fast boats depart from Ben Binh pier multiple times daily. During peak summer, advance booking is recommended.

The harbour front is the social centre of Cat Ba town - a curved promenade of hotels, seafood restaurants, and tour operator offices facing the bay. The town is busiest in the evenings when the night market sets up along the waterfront and the restaurants fill with visitors returning from day trips. Inland from the harbour, the streets become quieter and more residential.

The town has all practical facilities: ATMs, convenience stores, pharmacies, motorbike rental, and a range of accommodation from budget guesthouses to mid-range hotels. The Sunworld beach is a short walk from the town centre and provides the main daytime beach option without leaving town.

Cat Ba Town works best as a 2-3 night base rather than a day trip - the combination of Lan Ha Bay kayaking, a sunset cruise, a National Park trek, and the Radio Tower viewpoint requires at least two full days. The town itself is not the destination - it is the logistical base for everything around it. Eat on Núi Ngọc street rather than the harbour front for significantly better value seafood, and book tours the evening before departure rather than locking in from Hanoi to keep flexibility.
