What Makes Vietnam Military History Museum Special
Vietnam's Military History Museum reopened at a dramatically larger new location on Thang Long Boulevard in Nam Tu Liem District in November 2024, after five years of construction. The new complex covers nearly 386,600 square meters - a significant expansion from the old Ba Dinh location - and combines indoor galleries with extensive outdoor displays of weapons, aircraft, tanks, and military equipment spanning Vietnamese military history from the Hung Kings era through the resistance wars against France and the United States. The museum is one of Vietnam's seven national museums and the headquarters of the country's army museum system.

The most convenient option is GrabBike or taxi from the Old Quarter (around 15-20 minutes depending on traffic). Public buses also serve the area. What to Expect
👀 On the Ground
The museum combines indoor exhibition halls with large outdoor areas displaying aircraft, artillery, tanks, and the wreckage of American military equipment including B-52 bombers. In the outdoor area, the layout is split by side: right of the main gate displays equipment from socialist-bloc allies (Soviet Union, China); left side shows American and allied hardware - useful context before you start walking. Inside the main building, the grand entrance hall has a suspended aircraft overhead. Turn left from the hall to begin the chronological indoor galleries, which start from Vietnam's nation-founding period around 700 BC and follow a timeline through the French colonial era and the American War. Allow at least 2 hours for a proper visit.
